ADHD in Primary Care

From February 2026, Specialist General Practitioners who have completed the required additional training will be legally permitted to assess, diagnose, and initiate medication for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Previously, this service could only be provided by Psychiatrists or Paediatricians.

The assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of ADHD medication is a complex process and requires GPs to undertake further education and training to ensure it is done safely and appropriately.

Some of our GPs are currently undertaking the required training and, as such, Rātā Medical anticipates being able to offer this service in the future. However, at this stage, we do not have a confirmed timeframe for when ADHD assessments and medication initiation will be available at our practice.

In the meantime, we encourage patients seeking ADHD assessment, diagnosis or medication initiation to pursue assessment with a psychiatrist or paediatrician, as this remains the established pathway. Our GPs remain able to prescribe ADHD medication with endorsement from a psychiatrist or paediatrician.

Please note that ADHD assessment and diagnosis in primary care is not funded or subsidised by the government. Because these assessments require longer appointments and significant clinical time, fees will be higher than for standard GP consultations
